JEAN ROORDA

ASHLAND, OREGON

JUNE 2006

Jean Roorda, who is 28, is Rhonda’s younger sister, by eight years. About her relationship with Rhonda, Jean says, “Growing up, I think our relationship was awkward and sometimes conflicted, as lots of sisterhoods. The age difference was such that we did not have the same group of friends. She was more like a parental figure.” Once Jean was in college she reports that she had a similar type of relationship with Rhonda as when they were growing up in the same house. As Jean describes it, it was “not necessarily close but closer than we had been when she first left for college and I was at home.” (Both Rhonda and Jean went to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, Michigan.) Today, Jean and Rhonda are not especially close but they maintain a cordial relationship. According to Jean, they talk about every other month on the phone and e-mail each other sometimes. Jean received her B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park, and is a minister/entrepreneur. She reports no religious denomination. Jean has an eight 8-year-old son, Judah, who is multiracial.
